ProStart
A two-semester high school program that teaches students culinary arts and restaurant management skills, as well as employability skills. The program is run by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and is industry-backed. ProStart curriculum includes: practical skills, exposure to restaurants and foodservice, career opportunities, industry leadership skills, and employability skills such as communication, teamwork, professionalism, and time management. Students are connected to industry experts through guest speakers, class mentors, facility tours, and student competitions.
SkillsUSA
Students participate in a wide range of competitions that test their abilities in various trade and technical skills, such as welding, automotive technology, carpentry, cosmetology, and graphic design. These competitions are designed to mimic real-world job tasks and challenges. Students will often compete at a local and state level. If the student wins at the State level the have the opportunity to travel with the Alaska team and compete at the national level. Through workshops, training, and practice, students enhance their technical skills and knowledge in their chosen fields. This often involves working with industry-standard tools and technologies. SkillsUSA promotes leadership development through activities such as public speaking, team-building exercises, and project management. Students may take on leadership roles within their local chapters or at state and national levels.
